Japanese Cosmetics Expiration Date Guide

When it comes to Japanese skincare and cosmetics, product quality and freshness are taken very seriously.

Shelf Life of Japanese Products

Japanese cosmetic products have minimum shelf life of 3 years. According to Ministry of Health, Labour & Welfare Japan, Japanese products are not required to print an expiration date (on packaging) if the unopened product is safe to use for at least 3 years after manufacturing date.
That means most Japanese cosmetics have a minimum shelf life of 3 years when unopened and stored properly.
Manufacturing date or Period after opening (PAO) is printed on packaging only if a product has only 1 year of shelf life.

If a product’s shelf life is less than 3 years, brands include either:

  • A manufacturing date, or
  • A Period After Opening (PAO) mark (showing how many months it’s usable after opening.

After Opening Guidelines

Unlike European or Korean products, Japanese cosmetics don’t usually display a “use within” symbol after opening. However, general care rules still apply:

  • Use opened products within 6 to 12 months.

  • Store away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity.

  • Always close caps tightly to prevent oxidation.

  • Discard any product that changes color, smell, or texture.

Following these steps ensures maximum performance and skin safety.
